To celebrate next Tuesday’s release of his solo debut, Charity Starts at Home, Phonte has linked with DJ Flash for a project that should satisfy both longtime fans and newcomers to the rapper-singer’s discography. The aptly titled mixtape, The Best of Phonte, features 70 tracks jam-packed into 78 minutes. In Tay’s words, this is “the Phonte mixtape to end all Phonte mixtapes” that serves as a “crash course” for anyone not completely familiar with his work. But even if you have been following him since his beginnings with Little Brother, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better way to have all your favorite Phonte verses in one place. Before we get to hear Domo Genesis’ planned follow-up to last year’s very good Rolling Papers, the Odd Future weed-aficionado serves up a new mixtape, Under the Influence. Surprisingly, it features beats from a slew of cats not in his crew. As he noted on his Tumblr, “[I'm] stepping out of the box, it’s only a mixtape though, it shouldnt matter.” In particular, he has grabbed some beats from talented newcomer Michael Ozowuru. You might remember that these two linked up on Domo’s 4/20 anthem “Cashmere.” Well, they’re working together again on Under the Influence and, according to the rapper’s blog, they have a full collaborative mixtape in the works.
